A journey to the origins of ancient Calabria, discovering Hipponion: Greek walls, historic layers and panoramas telling over two thousand years of civilisation, today preserved in the city of Vibo Valentia.
The tour of ancient Hipponion offers a complete, layered reading of the city, going beyond archaeology to include historic neighbourhoods and religious traditions still deeply rooted in local life. Founded in the seventh century BC as a colony of Magna Graecia, Hipponion was a strategically and commercially vital centre. The route begins at the Greek walls of Hipponion, among the most significant archaeological remains of ancient Calabria. The tour then continues to the Norman-Swabian Castle, which houses the National Archaeological Museum Vito Capialbi, where Greek and Roman finds chart the evolution from Hipponion to Vibo Valentia. A central part of the tour is dedicated to the Rione Carmine, one of the city's most authentic and identity-rich neighbourhoods. The itinerary concludes with panoramic views over the Vibonese plateau and the Tyrrhenian Sea, from which the original logic of Hipponion's settlement becomes clear.
