In the green heart of Polia grows one of Calabria's most ancient and surprising presences: Woodwardia radicans, a rare giant fern considered a true "living fossil".
In Polia, near the Milo river, lies one of the most curious and precious natural corners of the Vibo Valentia area: the habitat of Woodwardia radicans, also known as the bulbiferous fern or, more evocatively, the prehistoric fern. This rare plant has very ancient origins, dating back to the Tertiary period, and can develop fronds up to about three metres long. Its presence is tied to damp, shaded, water-rich environments: cool, silent, almost hidden places, where nature still preserves traces of a very distant time. The FAI signals the presence of Woodwardia radicans in Polia, near the Milo river, highlighting its naturalistic value. The peculiarity of this place lies in the contrast: here we are far from the better-known image of the Costa degli Dei made only of sea, beaches and sunsets. Calabria changes face and becomes woodland, water, shade, biodiversity. A perfect stop for those who want to discover the inland and most authentic side of the territory, often left out of traditional itineraries. Woodwardia radicans is considered rare and protected, and some local sources describe it as a testimony to the ancient warm-humid climate that characterised these lands millions of years ago. For this reason the visit should be approached with care: not as a simple passing through, but as a small encounter with a very ancient Calabria. WeDei tip Visit it in comfortable shoes and at a slow pace, preferably during the less hot hours of the day. A place to be lived slowly: don't expect a "spectacular" attraction in the classic sense, but a more intimate experience made of silence, greenery and discovery. Perfect to pair with a small itinerary through inland Calabria, between Polia, Monterosso Calabro, Capistrano and the Serre Vibonesi.
