In the heart of Pizzo Calabro, a few steps from the panoramic square, the Church of Purgatory is one of the town's most unusual and evocative places. Also known as the "Church of the Dead", it preserves history, sacred art and a 17th-century crypt that tells a hidden, intense side of Calabrian religious tradition.
The Church of Purgatory, together with the Oratory of the Archconfraternity of Maria SS. delle Grazie, forms a religious complex unlike any other in Pizzo Calabro. The building is also known as the "Church of the Dead" because it was once linked to the commemoration of the departed on 2 November, before modern cemeteries existed. The church was founded in 1651 by the class of sailors and fishermen and still preserves a strong connection with the town's popular and religious history. Inside you'll find stuccoes, sacred furnishings, solid walnut stalls of local craftsmanship, an 18th-century organ and works by artists tied to the area, including Carmelo Zimatore, Diego Grillo and Brunetto Aloi. The façade is enriched by Della Robbia-style ceramics, created by Pizzo-born artist Giovanni Curatolo. The most singular element, however, is the crypt, discovered by chance in 1973 during repaving work. It is accessed from the sacristy through a trapdoor and a steep stairway. Inside lies a drainage tomb of the Pasqualini friars, dating back to the 17th century, carved into the rock and built in the shape of a cylindrical tower. A striking place, not suited to the most easily impressed visitors, but capable of telling an authentic and little-known page of the spirituality and ancient funeral practices of the territory. WeDei tip A worthwhile stop during a walk through the historic centre of Pizzo, perhaps paired with Castello Murat, the panoramic square and the old town. Recommended for those who love unusual places, local history and the most authentic glimpses of Calabria. Before visiting, it is best to check opening times or ask locally, as access to the crypt and interior spaces may not always be available.
