One of the most famous viewpoints on the Costa degli Dei, set on the Capo Vaticano promontory in the municipality of Ricadi. It looks out over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the bays below — Grotticelle in particular — and on a clear day the Aeolian Islands, the Strait of Messina, the Sicilian coast and Mount Etna all come into view.
Capo Vaticano's Belvedere is more than a roadside photo stop: it's one of the spots where the drama of this coastline really sinks in. The viewpoint sits on the promontory itself, in the municipality of Ricadi, opening out onto the Gulf of Gioia Tauro and the sea of the Costa degli Dei. From here the shape of the coast reads at a glance — the beaches of Grotticelle, the silhouette of the Torre Santa Maria promontory — and in clear weather the horizon stretches as far as the Aeolian Islands, Sicily and Mount Etna. The terrace is said to sit at around 124 metres above sea level, which fits with just how much sky and sea you can see from up here. Getting there The viewpoint is reached by car or scooter, following signs for Capo Vaticano and the lighthouse. It sits just before the lighthouse itself, down a side turn that's easy to miss; the access road is narrow and fairly steep. Parking is limited, especially in high season and in the hour before sunset, so it pays to arrive early. Tips Come in the late afternoon if you can, ideally on a clear day — that's when the view really earns its reputation and the most distant landmarks come into focus. It works best paired with the rest of the area rather than as a standalone stop: Grotticelle beach, the Capo Vaticano lighthouse and the other terraces nearby all fit easily into the same half-day.
